Translating Comic Strips from North Africa

Translating Comic Strips from North Africa
Sunday 7 July, 13:00 – 14:30
British Library Knowledge Centre, Eliot Room

With Nariman Youssef and Sawad Hussain.

A beginner’s introduction to the art of translation where you will learn the process of transforming comic strips from Arabic to English.

This introductory workshop will explore issues specific to translating comics, such as the tension between image and text, the importance of sound, wordplay and humour. With guidance from two experienced facilitators, you will be looking at Arabic comics recently published in some of the following countries: Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Sudan. A gloss translation in English will be provided, so knowledge of Arabic is not a must. Participants will leave with a greater appreciation of the challenges posed by translating comics, as well as a better understanding of the role they play in North Africa at the moment.

No knowledge of Arabic required. Feel free to drop in – no registration required.

In partnership with Shubbak festival.

Included in Weekend Pass and Sunday Day Ticket.
