More Fishes Than Stars

I’m not too certain about many things.

And I’m not sure who I am.

I ain’t got no mother and no father.

I’m slow like the trees when they grow.

I’m sluggish, like the ocean when it moves.

Ben Okri reads More Fishes than Stars at Book Slam, April 2011. The poem is from his 2012 collection of poetry, Wild. The wild in this collection “is an imaginative realm. It is an alternative to the familiar, the abode of spirits and sprites and an enhanced vision of nature.” Okri will be in conversation at Africa Writes this July, 2015.
