Africa in Translation Masterclass

This 2-hour masterclass with Wangui wa Goro is designed for translators who are either interested, starting out, or experienced in the craft of translating literary texts out of and into African languages and beyond.
Whether you are a budding or a seasoned translator, you will have an opportunity to share translation skills, tips and hacks, by working into and out of your language or language of competence.
Participants are invited to bring along a text which they are translating or wish to translate into English / French / Kiswahili / Gikuyu / Italian (the competencies of the facilitator) or any other language from or into their mother tongue. We will also be working on a common text from English which will be provided in advance.
We will look at a variety of tools (including digital tools), terminology, strategies, and publishing avenues, providing an overview of the translation landscape. We will also touch on marketing and publishing your work and what you need to establish or develop your skills or career, and share resources on the support available to translators or translation professionals.
The facilitator will also be available to support those who are interested in follow up for a voluntary donation to SIDENSI with a few one to one session/s and webinars over the coming months.

Dr. Wangui wa Goro, founder and curator for SIDENSI has served as a public intellectual, translator, editor, writer, academic, social researcher and human rights campaigner in Africa, USA and Europe over the last thirty years. In addition to promoting translation, Wangui, who works as an editor in an international organisation is also a writer in her own right. Her works include poetry, short stories, fiction and non-fiction. She has served in many international literary bodies and journals and also as a jury for a number of literary prizes. She is the current president of the Association for the Promotion of translation in relation to Africa (ALTRAS) and sits on the Executive Committee of IATIS (International Association for translation and intercultural Studies). She was the founder member of TRACALA, the Translation Caucus of the African Literature Association. She has run the Africa in Translation at Africa Writes for several years.
